One of the most extensive healthcare systems between Philadelphia and Baltimore — and the largest in Delaware — ChristianaCare offers residents valuable training in multiple locations, including:
Large academic, suburban hospital
A 906-bed, 1.3-million-square-foot, modern facility in Newark, Delaware, Christiana Hospital provides a level of care only available in large-scale teaching hospitals. Christiana Hospital includes Delaware’s only Level I trauma center (as verified by the American College of Surgeons), which is prepared to handle the most extreme medical emergencies for adults and children. In fact, it is the only Level I trauma center on the East Coast corridor between Baltimore and Philadelphia. The nationally recognized Center for Heart and Vascular Health, Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute, and Women’s Health services are located on the Christiana Hospital campus. Christiana Hospital has 26 operating rooms (including a four-room advanced videoscopy suite), and a 10-operating room surgicenter.
Inner-city, community hospital
A Wilmington, Delaware, landmark since 1890, the fully modernized Wilmington Hospital serves as ChristianaCare’s corporate headquarters and provides ChristianaCare’s distinguished, high-quality health care in the heart of Wilmington. It also is home to ChristianaCare’s inpatient psychiatric unit. The 321-bed, 622,100-square-foot facility also includes: an Emergency Department and a helipad with aero-medical transport capabilities, the Center for Rehabilitation, the Center for Advanced Joint Replacement, outpatient primary care services, behavioral health, memory care at the nearby Swank Memory Care Center, and more. Wilmington Hospital has 13 operating rooms, and a six-operating room surgicenter.
Private psychiatric facility
Rockford Center, Delaware’s first private psychiatric facility, has 138 beds for easy access to inpatient behavioral healthcare. There are partial hospital programs for children, adolescents, adults and older adults. Residents will spend two months at Rockford Center to train in child psychiatry.
Outside Experiences
A.I Dupont/Nemours is located in Wilmington, Delaware and considered one of the safest children’s hospitals in the country. Residents will spend two months at A.I. Dupont/Nemours to train in child psychiatry on the consult services and in the outpatient facilities.
Delaware Psychiatry Center (DPC) is located in New Castle, Delaware is a state-run facility that houses long term involuntary patients, along with the chronically mentally ill. Residents will spend a portion of their inpatient experience at DPC to gain exposure to their unique patient population.

ChristianaCare provides outpatient psychiatry services to children and adults.
