ChristianaCare offers a robust fellowship in Surgical Critical Care with an option for completion of an Acute Care Surgery fellowship in a second year of training. The ACGME-accredited, one-year Surgical Critical Care training program, and second-year for Acute Care Surgery provide(s) superior hands on training for physicians who wish to become highly skilled surgical intensivists and educators in trauma and critical care. Successful candidates will develop proficiency in high quality management of critically ill/injured patients, supervision of Surgical Critical Care units, and conduct scholarly activities in an outcome and value-based environment.

Christiana Hospital is a tertiary care hospital and the only ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center in the state of Delaware with a wide catchment area that includes parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. This provides rich clinical training experiences and opportunities. A broad-based curriculum incorporates the latest advances in technology for the management of the critically ill and injured patient. Training will include non-invasive and invasive diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for patient management.

Because ChristianaCare administers a General Surgery residency and is the largest teaching affiliate of Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, there is ample opportunity to teach residents and medical students in a variety of settings. Fellows are encouraged and supported in research endeavors through collaboration with a dedicated surgical research nurse coordinator.

Our aim is to prepare surgical intensivists and acute care surgeons who provide state-of-the-art surgical and critical care that recognizes the shared humanity between patient, family and loved ones. Our philosophy in educating physicians now and for the future combines excellence in patient care with advancement in scholarship.
