ChristianaCare has two advanced ultrasound machines, one at Newark and one at Wilmington. Fellows will participate in ultrasound clinic during outpatient electives and learn ultrasound for diagnosis and guided procedures.
Fellows will be integrating ultrasound in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Participation in USSONAR program is encouraged in the first or second year.
By the end of fellowship, fellows will be able to perform the following procedures:
- PIP joint (2-5) injection- Usually not ultrasound guided
- MCP joint (2-5) injection- Usually not ultrasound guided
- CMC joint injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Wrist (Radio-carpal or inter-carpal joints) aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Carpal tunnel/median nerve injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Elbow joint aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Olecranon bursa aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Shoulder joint (subacromial bursa or glenohumeral joint) aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Acromioclavicular joint injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- MTP (1st) aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Ankle (Tibiotalar) aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Subtalar injection- Usually ultrasound guided
- Knee joint aspiration and injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Baker’s cyst aspiration or injection- Must be ultrasound guided
- DeQuervain’s injection- Can be ultrasound guided
- Trigger finger injection- usually not ultrasound guided
By the end of fellowship, fellows will become proficient in diagnostic ultrasounds to evaluate for monoarticular or oligoarticular synovitis, effusions, erosions, tendon pathology or other local pathology of the following joints:
- Hand
- Wrist
- Elbow
- Shoulder
- Foot
- Ankle
- Knee
Giant Cell Arteritis Ultrasounds
Using the 22MHz linear transducer, fellows will participate in pilot temporal artery scans to evaluate for temporal arteritis at both Newark and Wilmington locations.
