The Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership (HSPAL) pharmacy residency is a 24-month program that develops competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and pharmacy operational services to prepare graduates to assume high-level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Competency areas emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, human resources management, financial management, use of technology, and advanced leadership. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational leadership role in a variety of settings. The PGY1 and PGY2 years are completed consecutively, allowing for a seamless transition and a robust residency experience.
Some Highlights of the PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL Curriculum
PGY1 Year
- Residents will complete the same core curriculum and requirements as those in the PGY1 Pharmacy program.
- There will be opportunities to complete unique elective rotations with an emphasis on administration and leadership to prepare the resident to enter their 2nd year of the program.

PGY2 Year
- Gain hands-on exposure across diverse pharmacy practice areas in inpatient, outpatient, and specialty care settings in a multihospital health system operating across state lines.
- Learn from accomplished pharmacy leaders and work closely with multidisciplinary teams to advance pharmacy practice and enhance medication outcomes.
- Participate in strategic projects, committee involvement, leadership of a pharmacy services area, and systemwide initiatives to hone leadership skills.
- Engage in teaching, precepting, and research, with support for conference attendance, professional growth, and an optional teaching certificate.
- Receive formal training in quality improvement science and process improvement methodology.
- Tailor our flexible program to meet the needs, goals, and interests of the resident.
