About Our Program

Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship

General Program Information

Christiana Hospital Newark Campus will be the main clinical site for the fellowship program. Inpatient and outpatient rotations will mainly be at the Newark campus which includes a 1039-bed, 1.3-million-square-foot modern hospital. The Helen F Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute is part of the Newark Campus and has been the leading provider in cancer care in the state of Delaware since it opened in 2002. The 200k square-foot modern Cancer Center treats over 200k patient visits per year as well as 3-4k new cancer cases per year which equates to 70% of new cancer diagnoses in the state of Delaware. Our clinical trial rate is 28% which is 7x the national average. Fellows will participate in multidisciplinary clinics, tumor conferences and didactics mainly at the Cancer Center which is a short walk from our main hospital.

Diversity and Inclusion

ChristianaCare’s Hematology and Oncology Fellowship aims to achieve/ensure diversity in trainee recruitment, selection and retention.  We will be partnering with some of ChristianaCare’s residency programs that have had success in this arena.  Role modeling and mentorship are at the heart of our fellowship program and will be enhanced by our diverse and inclusive faculty members- diverse in medical training, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender and age. Fellows will be assigned a mentor and are also strongly encouraged to seek out additional mentors, both personal and professional, to ensure pairing with a physician who can meet their particular interests and needs. From an educational standpoint, talks on diversity and inclusion are part of medical grand rounds as well as our program’s lecture series. We will also pair with institutions in the region to bring variety, depth and breadth to the faculty teaching our learners. Additionally, we serve a very diverse population (cancer center and two different hospital locations) with an interdisciplinary team allowing for our trainees to gain exposure to caring for patients from all different backgrounds.
