Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship

Education

The core curriculum will consist of a comprehensive list of topics from benign hematology, malignant hematology as well as from solid tumors. Educational guidelines set forth by ASCO and ASH will be used as a template. Some examples of the topics that will be covered include biology of hematopoiesis, hemoglobinopathies, anemia, mechanisms of clotting, hypercoaguable states, white cell disorders, transfusion medicine, lymphomas, leukemias, bone marrow transplant, lung cancer, breast cancer, GI and GU malignancies, etc. Topics will be assigned to fellows as well as attendings who will present at our bimonthly core curriculum conferences. Following each presentation fellows will participate in a board review question session pertaining to that topic which will be arranged by the PD.

Teaching rounds will exist in the inpatient and outpatient setting. In the outpatient setting fellows will rotate through our specialty clinics such as GU, GI, breast with the attending(s) who specialize in those malignancies. Prior to each clinic session attendings will review and provide teaching about the patients to be seen that day. The attending will also provide teaching throughout the day and at the end of each clinic session. Fellows will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the day and at the end of each clinic session. Feedback in the form of a formal evaluation will be completed by the fellow as well as the attending after each specialty rotation. Fellows will also be provided teaching while rounding on patients as part of the inpatient team. Similar to the outpatient setting, fellows will review the patients with the attending prior to rounds and will continue to be educated throughout the day caring for our admitted patients. The consult service will have a similar blueprint.
